British Columbia, and in particular the campus of the University of British Columbia, has been very active in encouraging university researchers in the natural sciences fields to take their research inventions and make them work.

The university has made facilities and sophisticated equipment available. To date more than 100 high tech and biotech UBC startups have been recorded. We have worked amongst these researchers for over 15 years assisting various teams to study implementation choices and to establish themselves in more than a dozen private sector high-tech enterprises.

Our roles have varied depending upon the group and circumstances. Common to all has been a teamwork approach whereby we supply the services and expertise that the academic group has not yet acquired. Functions may include:

  • Human Resources (recruiting, screening and hiring, payroll, salary administration, benefits negotiation and administration),

  • Finance (accounting, cash flow, banking, budgets, negotiations with investors, applying for, negotiating and administering grants and tax refunds, purchasing),

  • Marketing (researching markets, writing proposals, presentations to potential clients, negotiating agreements, preparing copy for brochures and ads, designing & executing booths and displays at conferences),

  • Business Strategy (conversion of technical ideas into business plans),

  • Facilities (locating real estate, negotiating leases, managing compete outfitting of complete labs, purchasing equipment, managing space after move-in),

  • along with relating to boards and outside investors.

Assignments have ranged from three months to five years. Cumulative value of leases negotiated is in eight digits. Operating budgets have ranged from $30,000 to $5,000,000 annually. Two enterprises are now public, several more are private, and only one has been wound up (2 new enterprises arose from this).
